Our citizenship is how we live our lives…

we need to bring our full selves to the table…

faithful citizenship is bringing our faith into

the issues of the moment.”

These words, spoken by Bishop Richard Lennon during a First
Friday Club Luncheon, offer a challenge to each of us to take full responsibility for how we vote by having well-formed consciences.  Accept the challenge to deepen your faith and your faithfulness through “Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.”

Every four years since 1976, The U.S. Catholic bishops have issued a Faithful Citizenship guide for voting.  The 2008 document is finished, following months of work, involving as many as six working committees.  In describing the document, the Bishops state: "We bishops seek to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with the truth, so they can make sound moral choices . . .   We do not tell Catholics how to vote. The responsibility to make political choices rests with each person and his or her properly formed conscience."  The document is available from the USCCB here.

In addition, the Maryknoll Office for Global Concerns has specific information on international situations that impact foreign policy issues.  Maryknoll operates under the auspices of the worldwide order of Maryknoll priests, nuns, brothers and lay missioners.  For their "U.S. elections: Loving our neighbor in a shrinking world" information, go here. The website links to Faithful Citizenship as well.
