Interested in working with those that Christ held most dear?
Want to connect to people in the real world?
The Catholic Worker - Peter Maurin Center in Akron, is a place, and an opportunity, to form friendships, to stand in solidarity with one another from varying economic, religious and social backgrounds. It is a place where those who have no place can come to meet, greet, be a community, and enjoy some of the small things we all take for granted.
The center will be open to all people in need of somewhere to gather. Our meetings and encounters are based on mutuality and compassion. Together those present may share food, conversation, music, games, or just peaceful quiet.
John 17:21-23 provides the tone for the purpose of the center;
“So that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me. And I have given they the glory you gave me, so that they may be as one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that you sent me, and that you loved them even as you loved me.”
The center is located in South Akron in what was formerly a bar and grill. After being left vacant for a lengthy period of time, two local businessmen stepped forward and through the intervention of the Holy Spirit and their generous donations, the acquisition of the property was made possible.
The building’s first floor was renovated during the first year and was dedicated on July 16th, 2006. The center’s purpose is to serve the least of Christ’s children by offering a location where they can congregate without prejudice, with openness and compassion.
Hours of the center operation will vary depending upon the needs of our guests. Current operating schedule is as follows;

What the Catholic Worker Believes – Peter Maurin
The Catholic Worker believes in the gentle
personalism of traditional Catholicism.
The Catholic Worker believes in the personal obligation of looking after
the needs of our brother.
The Catholic Worker believes in the daily practice of the Works of Mercy.
The Catholic Worker believes in Houses of Hospitality for the immediate relief
of those who are in need.
The Catholic Worker believes in the establishment of Farming Communes
where each one works according to his ability and gets according to his need.
The Catholic Worker believes in creating a new society within the shell of the
old with the philosophy of the new,
which is not a new philosophy but a very old philosophy, a philosophy so old
that it looks like new.
The central act of devotional life in the Catholic Church is the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.
The sacrifice of the Mass is the unbloody repetition of the Sacrifice of the Cross.
On the Cross of Calvary, Christ gave His life to redeem the world.
The life of Christ was a life of sacrifice,
The life of a Christian must be a life of sacrifice.
We cannot imitate the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary by trying to get all we can.
We can only imitate the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary by trying to give all we can.
